
"On Friday, an off-duty State Parks peace officer/lifeguard located a family in distress near the water line around 1 p.m., according to the release, as an adult male was attempting to rescue his daughter. She had been pulled out by waves that were estimated to be about 15-20 feet high. The girl's mother reportedly attempted to reach out to both father and daughter and was also swept into the water."
"The off-duty officer was able to pull the father from the water and immediately began rendering CPR. The mother and father were transported to a hospital, where the father was pronounced dead. The mother was listed in stable condition with mild hypothermia. The 5-year-old child remains missing. Search efforts continued until about 9 p.m. Friday and then resumed Saturday morning."
A search continues at Garrapata State Beach for a 5-year-old girl swept into the ocean Friday afternoon. Multiple agencies including the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff's Search and Rescue, California State Parks, Cal Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard are involved. The father was pulled from the water and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The mother returned to shore, was hospitalized with mild hypothermia and listed stable. A 2-year-old child was unharmed. Search operations paused around 9 p.m. Friday and resumed Saturday morning. Drivers on Highway 1 are asked not to stop near the beach to allow search operations room.
