
"The Monterey County Sheriff's Office, along with Monterey County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, California State Parks, Cal Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard have all been involved with the search, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. On Friday, an off-duty State Parks peace officer/lifeguard located a family in distress near the water line around 1 p.m., according to the release,"
"The girl's mother reportedly attempted to reach out to both father and daughter and was also swept into the water. The woman was able to get back to shore on her own. A 2-year-old child was unharmed. The off-duty officer was able to pull the father from the water and immediately began rendering CPR. The mother and father were transported to a hospital, where the father was pronounced dead. The mother was listed in stable condition with mild hypothermia. The 5-year-old child remains missing."
A 5-year-old girl was swept into the ocean at Garrapata State Beach Friday afternoon. Multiple agencies conducted searches into Saturday morning. An off-duty State Parks lifeguard found a family in distress after waves estimated at 15–20 feet pulled the girl out. The girl's mother was also swept in but returned to shore; a 2-year-old was unharmed. The lifeguard pulled the father from the water and began CPR; the father later died at a hospital and the mother was treated for mild hypothermia. The child remains missing. Drivers on Highway 1 were asked not to stop near Garrapata to allow search operations room.
