A Black History Month celebration on February 14 recognized multiple community leaders from Santa Clara and Alameda counties for their contributions to their communities. Colette Choates, a founding member of Milpitas' Juneteenth celebration and Black History Month flag-raising ceremony, was among those honored. She founded Parenting With a Purpose, which provides resources and support to parents, and serves as co-chair of San Jose Women in Business for Good. Other recognized leaders included Marion Cookie Cozine from Mission Bay Works, Dr. Jan Von Dickey from Bay Area Community Health, John Muragu from Washington High School, Bettina Strickland from Berryessa Union School District, Danielle Cranon-Jones from Newark's Recreation and Community Services Department, and Pastor Jason Reynolds from Emmanuel Baptist Church.
