Anthony Ruben Whisenant, a former U.S. Marine, pleaded guilty to a drug charge linked to the overdose death of another Marine due to fentanyl laced pills. Whisenant ordered what he believed to be oxycodone through Snapchat while stationed at Camp Pendleton in May 2020. After the pills caused an overdose at a party in Compton, he instructed another Marine to dispose of the remaining pills. This case highlights ongoing concerns about fentanyl distribution among service members, prompting federal authorities to focus on accountability for drug-related incidents.
Before first responders reached the Marine, Whisenant told another Marine to flush the rest of the pills down a toilet.
The pills, which turned out to contain fentanyl, were taken by the Marine at a party in Compton, according to prosecutors, who said he died shortly after.
