Man dies after car plunges 500 feet off Highway 1 cliff onto beach
A crash occurred north of Scott Creek on Highway 1 near Santa Cruz. Around 12:48 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of the crash. The vehicle left the west roadway edge, struck a call box, traveled through vegetation, and then went over a cliff. Two California State Parks lifeguards swam from Greyhound State Beach to the pocket beach at the crash site and provided CPR to the driver. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was the only person in the car. Authorities said it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs contributed.
