Man accused of setting multiple cars on fire in San Jose arrested, police say
""Anything could have gone wrong or worse," Juan Murrieta said. "It could have been a lot worse. I'm really glad that future businesses aren't going to be going through what they just seen. It was a big, big concern and dangerous.""
""As we collaborated, we utilized various tactics and resources to really identify and arrest the suspect," SJPD Sr. Public Information Representative Stacie Shih said. "And this includes aggressive canvasing of our affected neighborhoods and the locations, as well as interviewing witnesses and victims.""
""We have brought down crime over 20% since I became mayor and have regained our title as the safest big city in the country because we're being smart with the resources we have," Mahan said."
San Jose police arrested a 30-year-old unhoused man on arson, drug charges, and multiple outstanding warrants after a series of vehicle fires in late January. Investigators linked nearly a dozen fires on January 21 and January 26 to the suspect, with 19 vehicles destroyed and community concern about broader recent car-fire incidents. Police used canvassing, witness interviews, and the Real Time Intelligence Center to review public safety camera footage and identify the suspect. City officials cited technology and investigative collaboration in the arrest. The investigation continues to determine connections to other recent fires.
