Landowners along San Jose's historic The Alameda corridor to invest in neighborhood
"The Alameda was named 'The Beautiful Way' but it was the original El Camino so it was where people traveled from missions,"
"We're hoping new businesses and restaurants will be like you know what- that's vibrant I want to come to The Alameda, I want to start my business, to start my story, start my legacy and I think that's exciting,"
"It's the first property-based improvement district formed in the city in more than 15 years,"
"What really got it started is that the mayor's office saw that business corridors and the business associations getting those revived post pandemic is the single best way to get return on investment,"
Dozens of small business owners along The Alameda in San Jose formed the Alameda Community Benefit Improvement District to fund local improvements. The district covers several blocks from Stockton Avenue to Race Street. More than 400 property owners will dedicate $327,000 annually for the next 15 years toward cleaner streets, public safety, and beautification beyond city-provided services. Business owners hope the improvements will attract new restaurants and shops and encourage entrepreneurs to start businesses and legacies on The Alameda. Mayor Matt Mahan noted this is the first property-based improvement district formed in the city in over 15 years. The organizing process took two years.
