Interstate 80 closed in Tahoe area due to major snowstorm
"A storm is expected to bring piles of Sierra snow and soak the Northern California region on Monday. The KCRA 3 weather team issued an Alert Day for Monday because of how risky conditions could be. Travel is highly discouraged, especially at elevations above 5,000 feet. When chain controls are in effect, all vehicles except those with four-wheel-drive and snow tires equipped are required to install chains."
"Rain totals will not be as ample as snow amounts, but enough rain will fall to keep the roads soaked and possibly cause minor flooding. But rivers and creeks are not expected to flood. The National Weather Service also issued a Wind Advisory from 10 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Wednesday because of wind gusts of up to 35-45 mph. Power outages and downed tree limbs are possible, and winds may blow loose objects around."
A strong storm will bring heavy Sierra snow across Northern California on Monday. An Alert Day is in effect and travel is highly discouraged, especially above 5,000 feet. Chain controls may require vehicles without four-wheel-drive and snow tires to install chains, with reduced speed limits on Interstate 80 (30 mph) and Highway 50 (25 mph). Rain will keep roads soaked and could cause minor flooding, though rivers and creeks are not expected to flood. A Wind Advisory runs from 10 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Wednesday with gusts up to 35–45 mph, risking power outages and downed limbs. Multiple closures and spinouts have closed stretches of I-80 and Highway 20; big rigs are being held and significant delays are expected.
