A man was arrested in Oakland after evading CHP officers by boarding a bus, following his theft of a Jeep Wagoneer. The incident began when CHP received an alert from their Flock Safety camera system which utilizes AI to read license plates. Although the suspect initially fled when officers attempted a stop, they used aerial surveillance to continue following the vehicle until it stopped. The man attempted to escape on an AC Transit bus but was apprehended shortly after. CHP highlighted the effectiveness of surveillance technology in combating vehicle theft.
We were able to coordinate and stop the bus, confirm it was him and take him in.
This was a prime example of how the agency utilizes its network of surveillance cameras to find and alert officers about vehicle theft.
It's been game changing.
