Homeownership suffers in California, US as prices outstrip incomes

California's 2023 homeownership rate was 55.8%, up from 55.3% in 2022 and one percentage point better than the pre-pandemic rate in 2019, but still significantly lower than the nationwide rate of 65.9%.
California's homeownership in 2023 was second worst among states, with only New York having a lower rate. Meanwhile, the highest ownership rates were found in West Virginia at 77%, Delaware at 75.7%, and Maine and Mississippi at 75.5%.
