Confetti, an adult California sea lion, was found in Ballona Creek, Los Angeles, extremely lethargic and not eating. He tested positive for leptospirosis when brought in on Jan. 5 and received antibiotics and fluids that began to improve his condition. An X-ray later revealed two bullets lodged in his head that did not strike major veins, arteries, the brain, or any organs. Leptospirosis has caused large sea lion die-offs, including a 2025 outbreak infecting over 370 animals with about two-thirds dying.
