Gov. Newsom trounces Republicans with $120 million Prop 50 campaign haul
"A coalition of super wealthy and working people is giving him a big financial advantage. Over the past 11 weeks, Newsom and his allies brought in more than $120 million for Proposition 50, about three times the total raised by the proposal's opponents. The governor's backers include billionaires George Soros, Michael Moritz and Reed Hastings, as well as the state's influential nurses, teachers and public employee unions and an army of small donors."
"The lopsided haul has enabled the governor to blitz the airwaves ahead of the Nov. 4 vote on the ballot measure, an initiative that has propelled his rise to become a top Democratic antagonist of President Donald Trump. Newsom, a potential presidential contender in 2028, has championed Proposition 50 as a way to neutralize a move by Texas Republicans to grab as many as five extra seats in the US House of Representatives in next year's midterm elections."
Gavin Newsom is leading a campaign for Proposition 50 to redraw California's congressional maps to favor Democrats. His campaign and allies raised more than $120 million in 11 weeks, about three times opponents' funds. Backers range from billionaires George Soros, Michael Moritz and Reed Hastings to nurses, teachers and public employee unions plus many small donors. House Majority PAC also contributed support. Large spending has funded extensive advertising ahead of the Nov. 4 vote. Polls show majority support, with Emerson College at 57%, PPIC at 56% and UC Berkeley's IGS at 60% among likely voters.
