The California DMV has issued a warning about a scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming unpaid toll fees. These messages impersonate the DMV, threatening penalties if payment isn't made through a malicious link leading to fake payment pages designed to extract financial information. Reports indicate a rise in such scams, with the FBI noting over 2,000 complaints in 2024. The DMV suggests contacting them directly through their official website or contact center to prevent falling victim to such schemes, emphasizing that legitimate agencies rarely use text messaging for sensitive communications.
"The best way to protect yourself is to always use the DMV website or call our contact center to interact with us," Gordon said in a statement.
"The current scam makes the text look like a DMV notice that claims that the recipient has unpaid toll fees and threatens charges or penalties if they are not paid immediately through a provided (URL) link," the state agency said.
"In 2024, the FBI said it received over 2,000 complaints reporting scams representing toll road collection services in three states."
