Firefighter Appreciation: ABC7 salutes longtime Marin firefighter who went from 'farm to firehouse'
"This is my 34th year as a career firefighter, we tend to be a humble bunch,"
"You're showing up to make order out of chaos, we show up to do the best we can in any given moment, It says fire department on the door, it should say problem solving department, ultimately that's what we're there to do,"
"I grew up in a dairy ranching family, fantastic childhood, I wouldn't trade it for anything,"
"After my first season working with the fire department, that clicked for me. I remember telling my father, this speaks to me, to his credit he said ok, tell us how we can support you,"
Marin County Fire Captain Tom Nunes has served 34 years as a career firefighter, working across the Bay Area and the state on major wildfires. He grew up in a five-generation Portuguese dairy ranching family and originally planned to continue the family dairy career. After his first season with the fire department, he realized firefighting suited him and received family support to pursue the career. Nunes describes firefighters as humble problem solvers who create order out of chaos and sometimes endure long shifts with little rest. He has operated heavy equipment during incidents, such as using a backhoe in Point Reyes to clear debris for a barn fire. He values simple gestures of public thanks during National Firefighter Appreciation Month.
