Fire Threatens Part of Joshua Tree National Park
Briefly

Joshua Tree National Park is home to approximately 870,000 Joshua trees, unique icons of the landscape, but they face threats from climate change and wildfires. A fire reported on May 30, 2025, posed a serious risk, particularly in Covington Flats where some of the largest Joshua trees are located. Park officials noted that several trees were damaged. This fire follows a significant event five years prior when the Dome fire in Mojave National Preserve killed over a million Joshua trees, raising concerns about their survival amidst environmental challenges.
Climate change isn't the only risk for Joshua trees. The recent fire is a significant threat, particularly affecting their largest populations in Covington Flats.
Park spokesperson Donovan Smith noted that several Joshua trees suffered damage from the fire, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by this iconic species.
