Fire captain hit at crash scene in Contra Costa County; Vasco Road closed, then re-opens Friday afternoon
"He was out there assisting CHP officers directing traffic at a crash,"
"We really do need the public to be aware of emergency scenes,"
"You've got to slow down."
On Friday shortly before 1:30 p.m., a Contra Costa County fire captain was struck by a vehicle while assisting California Highway Patrol officers by directing traffic at a crash on Vasco Road between Livermore and Brentwood. The captain sustained a lower-extremity injury and was transported to a hospital. Vasco Road was closed in both directions but reopened by 4:30 p.m. Foggy conditions had affected the area for a week, producing visibility generally about a quarter mile and at times as low as 50 feet. Four separate crashes occurred on Vasco Road that day. Officials urged motorists to slow down and remain aware of emergency scenes.
