Joaquin Escoto, 28, a Mexican national born in Jalisco, is accused of killing an infant and two women in Modesto. Police responded shortly after 9:20 a.m. to the 1600 block of Monterey Avenue and found a 23-year-old woman dead from multiple stab wounds. Officers later found a 54-year-old woman dead at the scene and an infant who died after being transported to a hospital. A 4-year-old child was found inside the home and taken for medical evaluation. Escoto was identified, found hiding nearby, and arrested without incident. Escoto had been deported from the U.S. three times and arrested for DUI once before a June DUI arrest. On the day of his second DUI arrest in San Joaquin County, ICE requested notification of his jail release to deport him again, but local officials did not notify federal authorities due to California’s sanctuary law, allowing him to be released.
"On the day of Escoto's second DUI arrest, which occurred in San Joaquin County, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials requested to be notified of the Modesto resident's release from jail so they could deport him again, according to the official. But San Joaquin law enforcement officials hogtied by California's contested sanctuary law failed to notify the feds, and Escoto was set free, the official said."
