Doug Martin, 36, suffered a medical emergency and died after officers responded to a reported break-in on the 11000 block of Ettrick Street in the Oakland Hills at 4:15 a.m. Officers were simultaneously notified that an individual believed connected to the break-in was experiencing a medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers located the person inside the residence; a brief struggle occurred while attempting to detain him and he became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Paramedics transported him to a hospital where he died. Officers were placed on paid leave and multiple Alameda County agencies are investigating. Family confirmed the death and requested privacy; cause of death remains unconfirmed.
