This natural light show most commonly illuminates the skies over the farthest reaches of the globe near the North Pole, and people travel to places like Alaska, Iceland and Norway to see it.
Sometimes people only see it with their camera equipment in Northern California. This week's aurora forecast comes with two separate eruptions of material from the sun.
When these arrive at Earth together, they can trigger geomagnetic storms. The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a geomagnetic storm watch and is forecasting possible G3 conditions.
