Driver in deadly San Mateo Bridge crash was distracted by his cell phone, CHP says
"SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- Police released new details on Wednesday following Tuesday's deadly crash on San Mateo Bridge that killed a 54-year-old woman. The San Mateo County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Mary Hurtado Duran. Duran died after the driver of a Ford transit van crashed into her stalled Kia sedan. Video in the media player above is from a previous update According to California Highway Patrol, officers were alerted just before 3 p.m. of the crash on Tuesday."
"The driver of the Ford was said to be traveling at an unknown speed, when he became distracted by his cell phone and looked away from the road. CHP said when the driver returned his attention to the roadway, he noticed the stalled Kia directly in front of him. Despite his best efforts, however, the driver could not avoid crashing into the Kia."
California Highway Patrol officers were alerted just before 3 p.m. to a crash on the San Mateo Bridge in which a stalled Kia sedan was struck by a Ford transit van. The San Mateo County Medical Examiner identified the 54-year-old victim as Mary Hurtado Duran, who was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP reported the Ford driver became distracted by his cellphone, looked away, and upon returning attention could not avoid the stalled Kia. The Ford driver was transported to Stanford Hospital with major injuries. Westbound lanes remained closed until just before 8 p.m. while the CHP continued its investigation.
