California firefighters gained control over a wildfire that had burned more than 13,000 acres in the Sierra National Forest. The fire was 17% contained after days of struggle, amidst predicted heatwaves and increased fire risks across the state.
An official from Cal Fire highlighted that the driving force behind the fires were the dry, dead grasses that quickly become fuel for wildfires. The heatwave further escalated the situation, with warnings for excessive heat extending through the holiday period and into the following week.
The Basin fire led to the evacuation of 159 individuals in the Sierra National Forest, mostly from Balch Camp. While the fire approached the camp, there was no physical damage to the PG&E facilities that contribute to California's power grid.
