Crews repairing Alameda water main break that caused flooding and sinkholes
"The water main broke around 6 p.m. Sunday night, sending most likely thousands of gallons of water flooding down Webster Street at Buena Vista."
"They were able to turn the water off by around 11 p.m. after finding a 12-inch cast iron leak in an 85-year-old piece of infrastructure."
"And there's also a nursing home in this area, so we are in close contact with them to make sure that they stay safe, that they have what they need for the nursing home, for example, we're going to bring them water," EBMUD spokesperson Andrea Pook said."
"At one point several businesses said they lost their water and others said they were running low on water."
A water main ruptured in Alameda around 6 p.m., sending thousands of gallons of water down Webster Street at Buena Vista and flooding a three-block area. Crews identified the source and stopped the flow, shutting off water by about 11 p.m. after locating a 12-inch cast iron leak in an 85-year-old pipe. The break caused street flooding and sinkholes, and several businesses reported lost or low water service. EBMUD contacted affected businesses and coordinated support for a nearby nursing home, arranging water delivery. Alameda Fire and Police assisted EBMUD at the scene.
