As flash flooding in Central Texas worsens, California could face similar risks from climate change. Experts note that extreme rainfall events, although less common in California, are becoming more likely. NOAA's Dr. William Sweet highlights that flooding events have increased in frequency and intensity. ABC7 Meteorologist Drew Tuma emphasizes California's unique vulnerabilities during monsoon seasons and drought years. Past events, like the 2017 floods in San Jose, underscore that California should prepare for catastrophic flooding, even without tropical moisture exposure like Texas.
"We're flooding like we didn't use to flood, and it's causing all sorts of problems," said Dr. William Sweet with NOAA. Sweet says storm surges and precipitation events are growing not only more frequent, but more intense.
"A lot of times we think about this threat during the monsoon season, because that is a time when we can see a lot of moisture move across our state," said Tuma. "This is a threat that we have to face yearly."
