Coroner confirms Calif. woman was killed in shark attack
"The Santa Cruz County coroner has confirmed Erica Fox, who went missing while swimming in Monterey Bay, was killed in a shark attack in December, according to a new report released Thursday. According to the report, the Santa Cruz County coroner determined Fox's cause of death was the result of "sharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack." The death was deemed accidental. Fox, 55, went missing on Dec. 21 during an open-water swim in Monterey Bay with the Kelp Krawlers, a swimming group she helped found decades earlier."
"Multiple eyewitnesses reported seeing a shark in the area at the time, and one individual told law enforcement they saw a shark breach with what appeared to be a body in its mouth. Fox's body was later found in Santa Cruz County on Dec. 27 in an area south of Davenport Beach, according to officials. Shark attacks in California remain incredibly rare, with 231 reported since the 1950s."
