California voter ID petition set to be officially submitted after netting 1.3M signatures: 'Common sense'

California's Voter ID Initiative, led by Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio through Reform California, seeks to amend the state constitution to require photo identification for voting in all elections. The measure also mandates state election officials verify citizenship status of registered voters and maintain accurate voter rolls. With over 1.3 million signatures collected, the initiative will be submitted across all 58 counties this week, followed by five statewide rallies. California is one of only 14 US states without voter ID requirements. DeMaio claims over 70% of voters support the measure, including a majority of Democrats, with nearly half of signatures from Democrats and Independents. He argues other states implementing voter ID programs have increased election participation, including minority voting.
