In response to President Trump's threats to withhold federal funding over the participation of a trans high school athlete in the state track and field championships, California's high school sports authority, the CIF, announced an expansion of eligibility. The announcement included a new pilot entry process allowing cisgender athletes who narrowly missed qualifying to compete alongside their peers. While Trump criticized the inclusion of trans athletes, the CIF emphasized its commitment to supporting all student-athletes while complying with state law. A spokesperson for Governor Newsom indicated that the decision was made prior to Trump's intervention.
The CIF values all of our student-athletes, and we will continue to uphold our mission of providing students with the opportunity to belong, connect, and compete while complying with California law.
The CIF believes this pilot entry process achieves the participation opportunities we seek to afford our student-athletes.
