California has launched its first-of-its-kind online pesticide notification system, designed to inform farmworkers of upcoming pesticide applications. Developed by the Department of Pesticide Regulation over four years, the Spray Days California system allows users to search a map for notifications, offering daily updates and 48-hour notices for fumigants. The initiative follows years of advocacy from over 200 organizations and aims to reduce the risk of hazardous pesticide exposure, especially for the state's 500,000 farmworkers and children in nearby schools.
Angel Garcia, co-director of Californians for Pesticide Reform, called the launch "truly history." The statewide network of more than 200 organizations spent years lobbying for a warning system to reduce harms caused by the toxic chemical.
Gustavo Aguirre, associate director at the Delano-based Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment, said the system's launch is a "great victory" and the result of collective action across the state.
