The first arriving officer fired multiple rounds, striking the man, who was transported immediately to a hospital and died about 30 minutes after arrival. Officers later learned the man may have been holding a shovel. The shooting occurred in a residential area just north of La Palma Avenue near John Marshall Elementary School, which was briefly locked down before parents could pick up children. The Orange County District Attorney's Office initiated an independent investigation.
