Lawmakers in Southern California have introduced two bills aimed at promoting wildfire safety through property hardening. One bill, led by Sen. Steven Choi, offers tax credits for homeowners who install fire-resistant materials or manage surrounding vegetation. The other, from Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, establishes a grant program funded by insurance premium taxes to support homeowners and community projects focused on fire resilience. These measures come following devastating wildfires that destroyed over 16,000 structures in January, underscoring the urgent need for improved fire safety in vulnerable areas.
Anyone who chooses to make their home harder for the wildfire... they will get the tax credit, Choi said. This will be a tax incentive for them to do so.
This legislation aims to create safer homes and communities by providing state-tax-free funds to help residents purchase fire-rated roofs and develop non-ignition zones around their properties.
Funding for the grants would come from a portion of premium taxes paid by insurance companies.
Both bills were introduced in the wake of the deadly wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles County in January.
