Bonta says Trump is 'spitting in the face of our democracy' as federal funds remain frozen

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is leading a coalition of over 20 states in seeking judicial enforcement to unfreeze federal funds that were appropriated by Congress but have been frozen by the Trump administration. The coalition alleges that the administration has ignored a temporary restraining order suited to release these funds which are critical for programs like Medicaid. Bonta criticizes the administration for causing chaos and harm, asserting that these actions undermine Congressional authority and democratic principles, while the Trump administration claims it is following legal protocols.

The administration is creating widespread chaos and causing irreparable harm to our states and the American people," Bonta said during an afternoon news conference. "By not complying with the court order, by attempting to usurp Congress' constitutional responsibility to hold the purse strings, the president is spitting in the face of our democracy."

The Trump administration has denied wrongdoing and said it is acting within its authority.
