Nine backcountry skiers died in an avalanche on Castle Peak near Lake Tahoe. Recovery efforts were delayed several days due to heavy snowfall and the threat of additional avalanches. Crews located eight bodies and later found the ninth, which had been near the others but obscured by white-out conditions. Helicopters from the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol hoisted victims to nearby snowcats for transport. Officials used water to break up unstable snowpack as avalanche mitigation before rescue operations. Multiple agencies and local search-and-rescue teams participated. Three of the victims were professional guides.
