Garfias lured Vargas outside an Oxnard bar by text message, and he and Jimenez beat her in an alley before pursuing her in Garfias' truck. Surveillance footage showed Jimenez exit the truck, run after Vargas and shoot her in the chest, then attempt a second shot before fleeing. Officers found Vargas unresponsive and she later died at a hospital. Investigators recovered a blood-stained rope, a spent 9mm shell casing, a path of blood and broken acrylic nails matched to Jimenez.
