Evan Brodsky, a marine videographer, observed numerous sea lions toppling into the harbor in an event he describes as a "sea lion avalanche," sparked by perceived threats.
Brodsky explained that the sea lions’ behavior might have been triggered by something startling one of them, leading to a cascading effect among the group as they panic.
According to NOAA, California sea lions are social creatures known for their barking communication, but they are skittish, often fleeing at the scent of humans.
Brodsky believes the unusual gathering of sea lions at the harbor is linked to a red tide event, which depleted oxygen levels, impacting the sea lions' food supply.
