Bay Area man sentenced for fatal DUI collision near in 2020
"A Vallejo man was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years and 8 months in prison for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a 2020 collision that killed a 35-year-old Sausalito man while he and his wife were in Sonoma for her birthday. Abdulhadi Awad's sentencing in Sonoma County Superior Court concluded "a lengthy and complex legal process" beginning Jan. 26, 2020, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office."
"Competency was restored last month and Awad was sentenced by Sonoma County Judge Mark Urioste. "We are thankful that this dangerous individual has finally been sentenced to state prison for a substantial period," Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a statement. "Unfortunately, there was a real danger throughout this process that he could have been released to the streets without serving his sentence, and without any supervision.""
A Vallejo man received a 12-year, eight-month state prison sentence for driving under the influence and causing a 2020 collision that killed a 35-year-old Sausalito man while he and his wife were in Sonoma for her birthday. The defendant, Abdulhadi Awad, pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter before proceedings were suspended when he was found mentally incompetent to assist; competency was later restored. Judge Mark Urioste imposed the sentence after competency restoration. The victim, Jamie Narkunski, was killed and his wife, Natalie Weiss, was critically injured. Prosecutors described erratic driving, high speeds, and reckless acceleration through residential areas.
