Christopher Brignetti, a 54-year-old high school coach, died following a traffic collision while biking on Freitas Parkway. He collided with a vehicle making a left turn onto Lea Drive. Despite receiving medical aid, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities do not suspect intoxication from the driver, who has not been charged. The intersection has a history of similar collisions, and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition is advocating for safety changes to prevent future incidents.
The intersection of Freitas Parkway and Lea Drive has a history of collisions involving vehicles and bicyclists, with four incidents recorded between 2018 and 2023.
Had changes been made to the intersection after any of these four most recent collisions, this most recent tragedy would have been far less likely.
Some crashes are genuinely hard to predict or prevent; this is not one of those crashes.
The Marin County Bicycle Coalition urges the city to conduct an emergency safety assessment of the intersection and implement specific safety measures.
