An unidentified Fresno County individual died from rabies, contracted likely from a bat bite, marking the first human case in the county in 32 years.
The individual showed symptoms of rabies and sought treatment at a Fresno County hospital on November 18, later dying on Friday, indicating a rapid progression of the disease.
Assistant Director Joe Prado emphasized an intensive community response to the incident, stating, "We want to ensure that the community is aware that all the hospital systems are working together to make sure there is ample vaccine supply."
Rabies is an extremely serious disease affecting the brain, with this incident highlighting its rarity in humans, the last reported case in Fresno in 1992.
