Antioch council appoints new city attorney
"I am honored that the mayor and council chose me to serve the city of Antioch and contribute to the success, stability, and resilience of the community,"
"She brings deep expertise in land use law, Brown Act compliance, and litigation management,"
"City Attorney Asuncion brings proven leadership and the ability to navigate complex challenges," said Bernal. "I am confident she will be a valuable asset as we continue moving Antioch forward."
Lori Asuncion was unanimously appointed Antioch's permanent city attorney after more than a year with interim counsel. She succeeds interim city attorney Derek Cole and follows the resignation of Thomas Lloyd Smith in January 2025. The council conducted an extensive statewide recruitment led by Joe Gorton of Bob Hall and Associates. Asuncion brings over 18 years of municipal law experience from Stockton, where she joined as deputy city attorney in 2007, became assistant city attorney in 2018, and city attorney in 2022. Her record includes shaping city ordinances, overseeing sensitive investigations, and managing complex litigation with expertise in land use law and Brown Act compliance. Mayor Ron Bernal and Cole endorsed her appointment.
