Anti-tax-hike Side Accuses Santa County Sheriff of Wrongdoing in Measure A Campaign
"Just days before the polls were set to close in the Measure A tax-hike campaign, the "No" side upped the drama, accusing the "Yes" contingent-as well as Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen-of violating election laws. The Fair Political Practices Commission said on Oct. 29, it had received the official complaint. When the Los Gatan https://losgatan.com/anti-tax-hike-side-accuses-county-sheriff-of-wrongdoing-in-measure-a-fight/ reached the Sheriff's Office a couple days later, a department spokesperson said Jonsen didn't know he was now under a microscope for alleged wrongdoing. "The sheriff was not aware of this," said Brooks Jarosz, a senior communications officer for the law enforcement body, Friday afternoon, when the newspaper sent the filing in an effort to get an official response. "We will need time to evaluate before any official comments are made.""
"According to the complaint, the "Yes" side failed to report some of its spending. While the organization did include five expenditures totaling $214,500, including $125,000 to "Tributary Media LLC Sterling, VA 20165" for "Digital Ads," per the filing, the "No" side believes there are "presumably" subcontractor payments that were not accounted for, as required."
Days before Measure A voting closed, the Fair Political Practices Commission received a complaint alleging election-law violations by the "Yes" campaign and Sheriff Robert Jonsen. The sheriff's office said Jonsen was unaware of the complaint and requested time to evaluate before commenting. Measure A proposes a 0.625% county sales tax increase for five years to offset federal health-care reimbursement cuts. The complaint alleges the "Yes" coalition reported five expenditures totaling $214,500, including $125,000 to Tributary Media for digital ads, but that additional subcontractor payments were presumably unreported.
