For example, the survey took a curious route to gain insight into desirability asking folks to rank states as both most and least desirable. Most desirable? California ranked No. 2, behind Florida. Then came Hawaii, Texas, and New York. Each have big economies and/or great vacation spots. The lowest scores were in Mississippi, Kansas and Nebraska."

A poll of 1,000 American adults asked respondents to rate states on desirability, affordability and other traits. California ranked No. 2 as most desirable, behind Florida, with Hawaii, Texas and New York following. The Golden State also ranked No. 1 as least desirable, showing conflicted feelings. On affordability, California placed No. 3 for relocation with an unlimited budget but ranked 42nd for people who are financially struggling. Top bargain states included Alabama, Arkansas and West Virginia, while worst affordability scores included Massachusetts, Hawaii and New Jersey. California ranked No. 43 as most underrated and No. 29 for "most boring."
