Amir Haynes, 23, pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in late July for a homicide that occurred on Oct. 24, 2022. The victim, 19-year-old Jermaine Kennedy, was shot around 1:30 p.m. near 96th Avenue and International Boulevard in Oakland. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the two men walking and talking before the shooting. Haynes was arrested a week after the incident and received credit for time spent at Santa Rita Jail. Prosecutors dropped a murder charge in exchange for the plea. Haynes was transferred to North Kern State Prison on Aug. 12. Police never publicly revealed a suspected motive.
