"This person's name was finally realized after many many years and that is Velma Lee,"
"We operate a forensic lab that assists in the identification of these individuals,"
"We built that DNA profile from the skeletal remains. It was uploaded to genealogy databases where individuals have consented to allow law enforcement to use their information to solve crimes,"
Human skeletal remains discovered near the Anderson Cottonwood Irrigation Canal in Redding were identified as Velma Louise Silva Lee, born 1936, after remaining unidentified for 12 years. The Shasta County Coroner initially determined the remains were a female skull. A forensic genetic genealogy company, Othram, extracted DNA from the skeletal remains, built a genetic profile, and uploaded it to genealogy databases where users consent to law enforcement use. Investigators contacted potential relatives and performed additional DNA testing, which confirmed the identity as Velma Louise Silva Lee of Napa, bringing answers to her family.
