Jake Wark stressed, "Fires burning six inches, a foot, or even more underground can be extremely difficult to extinguish... Dead and burning trees already pose a serious hazard to firefighters because they can fall over without warning."
He added, "These fires are spreading unusually fast due to critical drought conditions... the ground and leaves are extremely dry, which makes for good kindling."
