In November 2016, Gwadar port symbolized stability, peace and prosperity for Pakistan according to then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, marking the official launch of the port's operations and start of the prestigious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as part of China's global Belt and Road Initiative.
Investors believed Gwadar under CPEC would transform into the next Dubai, connecting China's Xinjiang province to the sea through Pakistan, shortening trade routes, avoiding the Malacca Strait chokepoint, and bringing trade, infrastructure, and industry growth along the 2,000-kilometer corridor financed by China.
Gwadar's deep sea port, completed in 2007 and handed over to a Chinese company in 2013, was expected to be central to the CPEC, integrated into a special economic zone to revive the small fishing city into a bustling port city despite its current underutilization.
