The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reported that there were over 3,200 federally licensed gunmakers in 2021, but a few companies dominate the market. Over 494 million firearms have been produced in the US since 1899, showing a significant rise in production, especially at present. This focus on the top manufacturers reveals the concentration of production power among a select few companies.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearm and ammunition industry significantly contributes to the US economy, totaling $80.73 billion, marking a 322% increase since 2008. This extensive economic footprint is accompanied by the employment of 400,000 individuals, more than $25 billion paid in wages, and nearly $7.5 billion generated in taxes, emphasizing its vital role in the economic landscape.
