"The absolute, number one reason why I really like my job is that I sit right at the junction point between the engineering side of things, like AI engineering, and the business, "Unless I'm very much embedded in the business and understand our business, I'm not going to be able to deliver the right solutions for our investors and ultimately for our clients.""
"To be successful in this kind of position, you really need at least three core competencies,"
"That's what I've tried to achieve when hiring for my team,"
Dan Popescu, head of AI engineering for asset management at Goldman Sachs, was promoted to managing director. He leads an AI engineering team that builds and deploys tools across the asset-management group to help investors make faster, smarter decisions. Popescu says top AI hires must have three competencies: AI engineering, finance, and traditional software engineering. He prefers candidates who can code, understand markets, and embed technical solutions within the business. Popescu moved from the bank's core engineering unit into asset management two years ago and focuses on delivering client-aligned solutions.
