China's population is forecasted to decline dramatically to 634 million by 2100 from 1.42 billion currently due to record-low birth rates influenced by past one-child policy efforts.
Despite attempts by Beijing to reverse the declining birth rates by easing restrictions, including the shift to a two-child policy in 2015 and its eventual removal in 2021, the efforts have not been successful.
UN projections indicate that India and China will remain the most populous countries for the foreseeable future, with China's population expected to drop below 1 billion by the late 2060s, losing nearly 790 million people.
