She pitched a new department at Google. Here's her advice on selling big ideas to leadership.
Briefly

Mira Lane initiated the creation of Google's Envisioning Studio, focusing on AI innovation. During her early tenure at Google, she reflected on her career aspirations and proposed an AI prototyping lab through a succinct 'one-pager.' This initiative led to her position leading a team devoted to exploring technological impacts. She emphasizes the importance of handling rejection, stating that ideas should not be tied to personal identity. Moreover, she advises keeping pitches concise to capture the attention of busy executives.
Successful pitches should be brief, problem-focused, and tailored to your audience, she said. Lane advises being open to rejection and detaching ideas from your personal identity.
Though Lane's career transition appears seamless in retrospect, the vice president of Google's Tech and Society told Business Insider she has a long history of pitching new ideas. 'I just have a bit of a scrappy history of starting things,' she said.
Lane's first piece of advice is to get into a mindset where you feel OK with rejection. 'You have to be willing to have people say 'no' to you and be OK with that,' Lane said.
Lane said that when she pitched the Envisioning Studio to Google, the document she created was about three-quarters of a page. She said she knew that the leader reading it wouldn't have time to read an essay or a full proposal.
