The Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, reached a landmark $7.4 billion settlement over lawsuits linked to the opioid crisis. This new settlement is a revision of a rejected deal, where they agreed to pay $6.5 billion and relinquish control of Purdue Pharma. With additional funds allocated for crisis management, Massachusetts will receive $108 million. This settlement signifies one of the largest in ongoing efforts to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for the opioid epidemic, though court approval is still pending.
"The Sackler family will forever be remembered as a symbol of greed, profiting off pain to destroy countless lives across the Commonwealth and country," said Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell.
The Sacklers agreed to pay up to $6.5 billion and give up ownership of the company, which would pay nearly $900 million. The maximum contribution from family members is $500 million more than the previous deal.
