On March 14, 2016, in the squid grounds off the coast of Patagonia, a rusty Chinese vessel named the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 10 was fishing illegally, several miles inside Argentine waters. The encounter led to the sinking of the jigger after it attempted to ram the coast-guard cutter.
Since 2010, Argentina has chased at least 11 Chinese squid vessels out of its waters for alleged illegal fishing, with some vessels turning off locational transponders and crossing secretly into Argentine territory.
Argentina granted fishing licenses to two foreign vessels, operating under the Argentine flag but ultimately owned by the China National Fisheries Company (CNFC), which has been linked to illegal fishing practices.
Instances of Chinese vessels fishing illegally in Argentine waters, despite government action to deter them, demonstrate a significant challenge in maritime law enforcement internationally.
