Gas station workers on Long Island, Bronx owed $1 million in back wages, damages, feds say
Briefly

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the investigation revealed violations at 15 gas stations owned by Jagjit Singh, where over 100 employees received less than minimum wage and were denied overtime pay for hours worked over 40 weekly, some exceeding 85 hours per week.
Court documents indicated that not only did the gas stations fail to pay required rates, but also that Jagjit Singh did not maintain accurate wage records, which violated the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The judgment mandates Singh to pay over $1 million in back wages to the affected employees after the Department of Labor’s investigation uncovered severe wage violations spanning three years.
The complexity of labor law violations in this case is illustrated by the fact that several workers were paid less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25, all while working considerable hours without appropriate compensation.
